Audience Engagement

With any play that contains language difficult for modern audiences, it can be hard for people to find a way to crack open the play. Through my audience engagement activities, I plan to show audiences that Restoration era comedies can be fun and enjoyable, even if the language is hard to fully grasp.

Speaker's Night

Tiffany Stern, FBA

For The Country Wife speakers night, Professor Tiffany Stern of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom will be invited to join us either virtually via projector or in-person. Professor Stern is a professor of Shakespeare and early modern drama as well as works at the Shakespeare institute. Her work combines literary criticism, theatre and book history and editing from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Professor Stern wrote the introduction and was the editor of the New Mermaids translation of The Country Wife, and has studied the play extensively as a part of her research.

Professor Stern would be a great person to invite for speakers night because while our audiences may not know very much about William Wycherley, they probably have a basic understanding of Shakespeare. She would be a great person to invite to provide context of the Elizabethan and Restoration eras and help audiences make connections across history.
